General Rules and Procedures

 

 

Band Size and Instrumentation

The size of any performing Jazz Ensemble is not restricted, but normally accepted “Big Band” size is expected and literature should be in the appropriate jazz and rock styles. Divisions will be determined according to school enrollment.

 

Student Eligibility

All members of any performing ensemble must be a member of the ensembles school.

No directors are allowed to perform with their group.

 

Equipment

The following equipment will be provided: chairs, stands, piano, vibes, sound system, cords or any other needed equipment. Lighting will be standard for all performing groups.  Fronts will not be permitted.

 

Adjudicators

There will be four adjudicators.  The adjudicators will not sit together and will score independently of each other.  There will be a short clinic after each performance.

 

Adjudication Forms and Fees:

The cost per unit is $150.00 ( For 2010)  All checks must be made payable to NESBA.   Judge sheets will be made available to participating units.

 

Playing time limits

A time limit will be established for all performances. A minimum of 15 minutes and a maximum of 20 minutes will be expected. In the event an ensemble plays under or over time, it could negatively effect the final rating.

 

Dress

Formal dress is optional. Uniforms are not required. Good taste is expected.

 

Awards

Certificates and other awards will be presented at the event.

SECTION AWARDS FOR DIVISION A & B

 

Each of the participating ensembles will be evaluated as follows:

 

Saxophone Section – Trombone Section – Trumpet Section – Rhythm Section – and Soloists

 

Will be given a star award for their performance using the following evaluation legend:

 

            5 Star-  Superior

            4 Star-  Outstanding

            3 Star- Average

            2 Star- Below Average

            1 Star- Lacking

 

ENSEMBLE AWARDS

 

Overall ensemble rating will be based on a medal system using the following evaluation legend:

 

            5 – Gold Medal- Superior

            4 – Silver Medal- Outstanding

            3 – Bronze Medal- Average

            2 – Medal of Merit- Below Average

            1 – Participation Medal- Lacking

 

INDIVIDUAL AWARDS

 

Will be presented as follows:

 

            Most outstanding Sax player

            Most outstanding Trumpet Player

            Most outstanding Trombone Player

            Most outstanding Rhythm Player

            Most outstanding Soloist

 

            Most outstanding Saxophone Section

            Most outstanding Rhythm Section

            Most outstanding Trumpet Section

            Most outstanding Trombone Section
